Diane J. Johnson, Ph.D.


Dr. Diane J. Johnson has more than twenty years experience working within the corporate, public and social/not-for-profit sectors. Her international consulting firm, Mmapeu Consulting, strengthens, empowers and supports not-for-profit organizations, public agencies, businesses, educational institutions, communities and individuals in their work to change the world. The name of the firm comes from the South African word which means "woman who carries ideas". This title was presented to Dr. Johnson as a gift from NGO's she worked with during her time in South Africa during the early 1990's.


Mmapeu Consulting provides an extensive range of customized services to clients working towards effectively accomplishing their missions ---- whether that happens to be furthering community capacity and neighborhood revitalization, expanding the organizational capacity of an initiative, creating effective diversity programs, developing strategic plans, designing innovative management systems, designing successful partnerships or creating innovative leadership development programs.


Mmapeu Consulting offers consultations, trainings and workshops, planning and implementation in the areas of: partnership and collaboration, organizational development and strategic planning, diversity and anti-oppression, board of directors' development, program development, participatory philanthropy and program evaluation. Just in the past four years Diane has trained and worked with more than 2,350 individuals, groups, students, teachers, volunteers, and community activists. Her work has taken her to South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and extensively throughout the United States.


Dr. Johnson's practical and academic background has cultivated expertise in the areas of higher education; economic and community development; social capital; volunteerism, community service and community service learning; non-profit management and non-profit management education; philanthropy; marketing and media relations. One of the strengths of Mmapeu Consulting is the ability to provide clients with both an intuitive and analytical perspective of their work, identify challenges and facilitate the creation of solutions.


Past clients include: Boston Public Schools, the Corporation for National Service, the C. S. Mott Foundation, Housing & Urban Development (HUD), INDEPENDENT SECTOR, The Lincoln Filene Center-Tufts University, Massachusetts Department of Education, Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Milwaukee CDBG Office, National Education Association, National Funding Collaborative on Violence Prevention, Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation, Oxfam America and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.


Dr. Johnson has led workshops, trainings and presentations for such organizations as: Association for Research on Nonprofits and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA), American Association of Colleges and Universities (ACC&U), Brown University, INDEPENDENT SECTOR Annual Meeting and Spring Research Forums, Institute of International Education, National Network of Grantmakers, Share Our Strength, The Enterprise Foundation, The Support Centers of New York and Massachusetts, and University of Rhode Island.


Dr. Johnson is author of Proud Sisters: The Wisdom and Wit of African-American Women, and Mother Love which have sold more than 160,000 copies since their publication in 1995 and 1996, respectively. Dr. Johnson is also co-author of The Cultural Diversity Fieldbook and has published numerous articles on fundraising, collaboration and diversity.


Dr. Johnson received her Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Studies from Tufts University. Her doctoral dissertation, "The Cosmology of Cross-Sector Organizational Collaborations: An Examination of Public, Private and Not-for-Profit Organizations Engaged in Community Problem Solving" focuses on the success factors and impediments to partnerships between the three sectors. Dr. Johnson received her M.A. from The New School for Social Research at the Graduate School of Management and Urban Policy and her B.A. degree from the University of Pennsylvania. She is also certified in conflict mediation from the Institute for Mediation and Conflict Resolution in New York City.
