Linda Booth Sweeney

Linda Booth SweeneyAs a researcher, author and consultant, Linda is dedicated to helping people of all ages learn to develop their own insights about the nature of the complex and interdependent world around them. Linda investigates and develops methods and tools for defining, investigating and solving systems-based challenges. For the past ten years, Linda has worked with the Organizational Learning Center at M.I.T. (now the Society for Organizational Learning, SoL) as a project leader, helping member organizations to solve work challenges through systems thinking and its related disciplines and to integrate systems thinking into in-house professional development programs. Linda has published several books designed to simplify understanding of systems frameworks, concepts and tools and to provide visual and experiential examples of systems-in action. She is currently an instructor in education and doctoral candidate at Harvard's Graduate School of Education.

Integration and Development of Systems-Based Inquiry

Linda has designed and conducted in-person and technology assisted training programs for corporate leaders, managers and educational practitioners. She has also taught a semester-long course on "Systems-Based Inquiry" to Harvard and MIT graduate students. Linda has created several tools designed to make systems thinking more accessible, including:

  • a facilitated on-line learning course using distance learning technologies that enabled participants to engage in continuous learning while working on real work issues over a three month period;
  • a CD-ROM designed to teach the disciplines of systems thinking and mental models through real-life scenarios;
  • A set of systems-based dilemmas (i.e., the Systems-Based Inquiry protocol) designed to surface people's conceptions of targeted systems behaviors.
  • A three-volume book of systems thinking exercises for use by managers, consultants and educators, entitled: The Systems Thinking Playbook: Volumes I-III (1995/1998/2001). Co-authored with Dennis Meadows. (Turning Point/Pegasus Communications).

Linda is currently conducting research with MIT Sloan School MBAs and MBA's and managers from around the country to assess understanding of dynamic complexity. Along with MIT professor John Sterman, she is developing an inventory of brief pencil and paper tasks that enable individuals to self-assess understanding of particular aspects of dynamic complexity, such as nonlinear relationships, circular feedback, time delays and stocks/ flows.
